How to paint a room like a pro in 10 easy steps

Having the job know how to paint a wall is a great skill to have. Knowing how and where to start out though is critical which is why in the below guide our expert Painters and Decorators in Birmingham will be guiding you through exactly how to do this.

1. Have a plan of action

Is the room your looking to paint small, large or somewhere in-between the two?. If so how would you like it to look. Another thing to consider in the plan is the potential costs of the project and also where to shop around for quality supplies. Generally the better materials you invest in the longer the wear and tear.

2. Measurements

Knowing the rooms measurements will help you in the long run such as working out actual project costs. Paint usage can vary from brand to brand which is why it is always best when buying to check out the provided measurements on the back to help you save on cost. Another factor when using paints can also be the surfaces it is used on.

3. Choosing Paints

When it comes to choosing paints there are many various colors and brands. What you need to ask yourself is what kind of result are you looking to achieve, whether this be a more standard finish or something a tad more vibrant. Knowing what you exactly want and desire will save you both effort and money in the long run. Another thing to take into account is the paint brands reputation which can also save you from costly mistakes. We recommend to always stick with reputable branding.

4. Have the right tools for the job.

No job can start without the right tools and equipment that is why we always recommend having the ones listed below. These Include having.

  • A quality paint tray
  • A paint rolling brush plus extender (having both these combined makes the job much easier!)
  • A micro fiber sleeve
  • A Decent angle paint brush
  • A scraper
  • Painters tool (preferably a 9 in 1)
  • A Knife
  • A ladder (For higher up rooms)
  • Quality Sanding pad
  • Durable Quality Paint

 5. Prepare your room in the correct manner.

With everything in place you now should be ready to prep your room. Remove any cover plates from switches. Also be sure to tape over switches, receptacles and edges of base boards and Mouldings with a special painter’s tape.

Put any furniture into the centre of the room and put on a special drop cloth. Also put a wall to wall drop cloth onto the floors.

Fill in any holes on walls with a quality dry poly filler. Remove dust with a tap cloth. Before beginning any paint work make sure your walls are dry and clean when necessary.

 6. Use quality and durable paints for your walls.

Choosing a quality paint will give you a much more desired finish. Paint preferencing will always be down to the individual whether it be a bright look or standard one you are after.

7. Paint Preparation

After choosing your desired paint you are then ready to start the preparation process. As mentioned above each paint brand can indeed be different depending on the individual branding and texture meaning that setting after certain periods of time is not uncommon. To tackle this issue, we recommend to stir before use. Preferably you want to do this with a specialized wooden stick. To open the paint tin you will need a preferably flat headed screwdriver, you can then lift off the lid and begin the process of stiring the paint well with your specialized wooden stick.

8. Starting in the correct format.

When starting a paint job it is important to start it in the correct format. A good tip is to start from the wall top, just below the masking tape areas and working your way down the edges towards the bottom with an angel brush. You can then use your roller brush plus if desired extender for the durational middle part of the wall. A good and well known practice is to apply the the desired paint left to right (W Style) then slowly working your way down.

 9. Drying times.

This will be very much room dependent including types of paints used, surface texture and current climate conditions on the given day. Allow a few hours in-between before applying additional coats of paint on top. Room ventilation such as opening windows and doors can sometimes speed up the drying process. Additional information may also be provided on the back of the paint tin.

 10. Additional Paint Layers.

Depending on the particular paint you go with it may be necessary to apply a few additional painting coats to get a much more desired finish. This however is always dependent with each situation being different.

Finishing off and clearing up

Once all the work has completed you then want to carefully tidy up surrounding areas. When doing so be sure to take care especially with the handling of room furniture, improper care could lead to unwanted marks and stains. This is not something ideally wanted after such dedication. Any floor sheeting should also be handled with proper care and folded accordingly. You may also want to shake off your sheets, you should do this in a suitable outside location. Once completed store this along with any of your other equipment away in a safe place for your next project.

The last and final thing to do is to sit back and look at what you have achieved. The above process can be completed multiple times.
